Every day, we fight skin imperfections, using countless cosmetic products in hopes of achieving healthy and beautiful facial skin. We often waste too much time wondering which product is right for us. In addition to traditional creams, we often come across emulsions, fluids, gels, and serums on cosmetic shelves. These unfamiliar names make many people stick to tried-and-true products, while a smaller group ventures to replace creams with newly introduced options. To confidently choose the right product, let’s explore what fluids and emulsions are and how they differ from each other.
Fluid
A fluid is a lightweight version of a moisturizing cream, essentially a “liquid cream.” Its weightless, liquid texture is achieved through a high water content (often glacial or thermal) combined with ingredients that regulate sebum production. This product is most commonly used in warmer seasons because it feels light on the skin and doesn’t clog pores. It is particularly suitable for people with oily or combination skin, as well as those who dislike the sticky feeling of traditional creams.
• For combination skin, fluid helps control excess shine.
• For oily skin, it is an excellent option for year-round use, both in summer and winter.
• By choice, it can also be used for dry or problematic skin, but it may not be sufficient on its own.
Can Fluid Replace Face Cream?
Fluid is essentially a cream with a lighter texture that absorbs quickly. If you have oily skin, you can confidently switch to fluid-based products. However, for dry skin, the moisturizing properties of a fluid may not be sufficient.
Types of Fluids
• Gel fluid – Provides a fresh, lightweight feel;
• Tinted fluid (such as BB/CC creams) – Applies in a thin layer, lightly covering imperfections while maintaining a “weightless” sensation. Unlike heavier foundations, tinted fluid doesn’t create a “mask-like” effect, cause discomfort, or smudge, making it ideal for hot weather;
• Spray fluid – Typically used for hair. This product doesn’t weigh hair down or leave it greasy but adds a refreshing touch.
Emulsion
An emulsion is a product that bridges the gap between serums and creams. It is lighter than a cream but heavier than a serum. Emulsions are less concentrated than serums but more targeted in their effects than heavier creams. Simply put, an emulsion is a lighter version of a hydrating cream.
Unlike most heavy face creams, emulsions are usually water-based, which makes them lighter and thinner. In some cases, emulsions come in gel or almost liquid forms with a lotion-like consistency. They generally absorb much faster into the skin and don’t leave the same residue as some creams.
Composition and Effect
While creams work with water and oils separately, emulsions mix them into a unified product using emulsifiers. This allows emulsions to penetrate deeper layers of the skin, delivering more effective results. These products are suitable for all skin types.
Benefits of Emulsions
• Their lightweight texture makes them ideal for oily skin, providing hydration without clogging pores or adding extra shine;
• Emulsions are often preferred by people with problematic or oily skin;
• In hot and humid climates, they keep the skin cool and light while delivering the necessary hydration;
• They can serve as an excellent makeup base for both summer and winter.
How to Use an Emulsion
Apply an emulsion after your serum as an additional hydrating step. If needed, layer a cream on top.
Fluids and emulsions are different products designed for specific skin needs. The easiest way to find the right product is to determine your skin type and its unique requirements.
